At Virgin Megastore, we believe in doing business for good, with a strong commitment to both your safety and our environmental responsibility.

We're excited to share a big update: starting today, we’ll no longer be selling cookware that contains PFAs, also known as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their potential health risks. We want to make sure the products you use are as safe and sustainable as possible.

What are PFAs, and why are they called ‘forever chemicals’?

PFAs (short for polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of about 4,700 chemicals that have been widely used in all sorts of products for years. These chemicals are great at repelling oil and water and resisting high temperatures, which is why they show up in everything from waterproof clothing to non-stick cookware.

But here's the problem—PFAs don’t break down in the environment or in our bodies, which is why they’re called ‘forever chemicals’. Over time, they build up and can pose some serious health risks. They’ve been found in human bodies, animals, and throughout the environment, adding to the total chemical exposure we face.

Where do PFAs come from, and how do we get exposed?

PFAs are pretty much everywhere—plastic water bottles, food packaging, household dust, and more. While it’s hard to avoid them completely, one of the most direct (and avoidable) sources is non-stick cookware. That’s why we’re committed to making this change.

How harmful are PFAs?

PFAs can be harmful to both people and wildlife. Studies have shown that these chemicals can:

  • Disrupt your hormonal system (they’re known as endocrine disruptors).

  • Increase the risk of certain cancers

  • Damage your liver

  • Increase cholesterol levels

  • Affect your reproductive system

  • Lead to lower birth weights in babies

  • Weaken the immune system (some studies even link them to reduced vaccine responses in kids).

  • Contribute to obesity

Children and the elderly are especially at risk. Beyond personal health risks, PFAs also come with a hefty cost to society. One study estimated that health-related issues caused by PFAs could cost Europe between €52-84 billion annually (Nordic Council of Ministers, 2019).

Why are we banning PFAs from our cookware?

Your health and safety mean everything to us. With more research emerging about the dangers of PFAs, we knew it was time to act. By removing PFAs from our cookware, we’re not only protecting you and the environment from these forever chemicals but also raising the bar for safety and transparency in the retail industry.

What are the alternatives to non-stick cookware?

The good news is, there are plenty of great alternatives to non-stick cookware! Stainless steel, cast-iron, and ceramic-coated cookware are all excellent options. These materials are favoured by professional chefs for their cooking quality and durability, and they look pretty stylish, too.
